The weather here in Wales has stayed very dry and mild, it is going to stay dry all this week again, brilliant! So about a half my herd are still out although, I'm feeding them on hay. I may have to get the bull in and clean his tail off though, not sure why its got messy at this time of year?! Here is a pic of his 7 month old son Stephanie

Well I've decided to bite the bullet and he is going off to be collected for AI, or at least that is what I hope will happen, he has had most of the tests required here at home and passed them all. I am waiting for them to come and fetch him at the moment, I am quite nervous. I first saw him with Palmchat when he was a sweet little calf and then he got orphaned and then a cow injured him. I have quite a soft spot for him, he has been here over 6 and a half years and I hope he will be OK!!! Odd as it sounds I feel as if I am sending a member of the family off to boarding school or something..... Stephanie

Others have posted before about having their bulls collected and it seems a big step to trust someone to care for your animal for the amount of time they are gone but in the end it will be worth it. He does seem to have had his share of knocks along the way but I'm sure he will be fine and return home safe and sound. With all that said, if I were you, I would still be nervous, lol. You can't help it. Like you said, you have had him for over 6 years. Just take a deep breath, LaDena

Thank you Marion Ladena and Genebo, they fetched him this afternoon. He wasn't very sure about going in the trailer, I think it smelled of other bulls, so we had to lead him up in and once shut in the front he thrashed around a bit, which is not like him at all, it is very enclosed and I felt very sorry for him, I just hope he travels OK!

Glad to hear that he got off safely. How long will he have to be gone? Hope the time flies by quickly for you. LaDena

Hello Ladena, Hedgehog will be in quarantine for nearly a month before he is moved to another part of their facility for the actual collection procedure, I gather he is likely to be there for about 3 months and then the semen has to be in quarantine for a month before it is dispatched. He won't come home then either as he is going to another farm. He won't mind that though! Ladies to "look after". Stephanie

I can't believe it...BUT as of today some of his straws are available for AI use OMG, The straws themselves have to be in quarantine for a month before they can be released for use,) this does not seem possible and there are a few people waiting for them to become available so I am REALLY chuffed! I really didn't think it would happen, there are so many tests to pass, I was sure he would fail at least one!!! Oh - and he is going to be in a glossy catalogue. Stephanie

That's really exciting Stephanie, congratulations! I hope "chuffed" is a good thing... . It had to have been nerve-racking with all he went through and the time away, wondering if he would make the grade. Is he back at home now? He really is a handsome guy, where can we get the glossy catalogue?

Thanks Joel, No he isn't back home. He is still being collected until the end of the month. Then a friend who is trying to keep to Woodmagic lines would like to hire him for a month or so as he has tried to find another Woodmagic bull but they just aren't around, he did get a very old one, quarantined him but found he had a problem and so he went in his freezer. So he will be a way for quite a while. I had considered letting him stay away and he was going elsewhere for that but I'm not sure my young bull is working so he may need to come home after all, we will see. I've tried not to pester them to often about how he is but they say he has been fine there and very well mannered with everyone. The glossy catalogue isn't available yet but I will crow about it plenty when it is - don't worry about that! I think the "bull people" want to take a "posh pic" of him for it all brushed and shiny, I hope they haven't got him massively fat. In the mean time my contact details are on my website if you would like to know anything about him just drop me an email. There are some pics of him on there, in fact it opens up with him looking over a stile when he was about 5 or 6 months old. www.duffryndexters.co.ukStephanie

What?? You mean they haven't held a phone up to his ear to let you talk to him? It must be so hard to part with him for so long. I know you'll be glad when he's home! Btw, what countries can his semen be exported to?

Hello Susan,
His semen can go to most countries I think, I tried not to leave out many areas that would be likely to be interested in Dexter semen.
