A link to the summary hip height data from the 2002 Cavanagh et. al. study in Australia and hip height normal distribution curves created from that data for carrier and non-carriers with breed guidelines overlaid. Go to www.silvermapledexters.com Click on SMD Resources tab and "Dexter Height Distribution" pdf file.

And so my confusion grows Marg. The bull you refer to a chondro-carrier or a non-carrier being assessed against a Standard, which as stated in this thread, is for chondro-carriers? Ummm I am concerned that any association could “deny entry onto the Accredited AI list” for height when the Standard, as written in the Herdbook clearly states wihtin the Standard: SIZE: Cows: - The preferred height is between 97 cm (38 inches) and 107 cm (42 inches) at the rump. Bulls: - The preferred height is between 102 cm (40 inches) and 112 cm (44 inches) at the rump.
The word there is “preferred” and provides for a very strong legal challenge. EXTRACT FROM HERDBOOK The Dexter Breed Standards for Breeding, Showing and Registration (Male), represents the basis to which Dexters should conform and to which the quality of Dexters should be judged both in selecting for breeding, showing and registering. Feature | | | | | | Ideal | Allowable | Undesirable | Unacceptable for Registration | HEIGHT OVER RUMP AT 3 YEARS OLD (AT HIP BONE) | As stated in Breed Ideal 97 cm (38 inches) - 117 cm (46 inches) approx. | 97 cm (38 inches) - 117 cm (46 inches) approx. | Under 97 cm (38 inches) or over 117cm (46 inches) approx. | |
Note the absence of anything written in the Unacceptable for Registration column? ? And Clause 10.3 of Clause 10 – Mating of a registered animal / accredited AI sires has:
10.3 The registered owner of a registered Dexter bull desiring to provide semen that is intended for the production of registered calves outside the owner's herd is required to accredit such bull for general use by notifying the Association of such intention on the prescribed form (Appendix B), paying the prescribed fee (Appendix C) and providing the following additional information:- 10.3.1 An Approved Dexter Association five-generation pedigree registration certificate; 10.3.2 Parent verification by DNA; 10.3.3 Proof that semen has been or will be collected in a licensed AI centre in Australia or overseas complying with Australian Veterinary requirements; 10.3.4 Veterinary Certificate of Soundness; incorporating height measurement at the rump, over the hip; 10.3.5 An agreement of entitlement between owners where the bull and/or the Australian Semen Marketing Rights are subject to Multiple Ownership; 10.3.6 A Linear Classification report verifying that an Australian born bull has a score of VG 85 or above. 10.3.7 The tested carrier status of Chondrodysplasia with the resultant Carrier or Non-carrier status identified on the Accredited AI Sire listing. 10.3.8 Effective 14th February 2009 all animals, either born in Australia or being imported, with AI Accreditation being applied for must be tested for Pulmonary Hypoplasia and Anasarca (PHA). Bulls carrying the PHA gene will not be accepted for AI Accreditation.
Again I can see nothing here regarding height ?? And as for the ‘recent’ Multiple Ownership stipulation, the association has been notified that "it is the straw which has broken the camels back" for many studs who are now dispersing their registered stock sick of the money-hungry grabbing exercises which makes no sense. Calculating the loss of those studs’ memberships, testing revenue and new registrations over the past three years against the collecting of fee revenue for chondro testing of a handful of multiple owned bulls doesnt make financial sense. And they should also know that this multiple-owned stipulation is being seen by many as a hidden agenda item in the preparation of eventual / possible denial of registration for chondro-carriers………..

Jeff thank you so much, it's been a long time since I've seen that study. Maybe we should have something like that on the ADCA website. As I have stated to you in the past and will here again, you have a GREAT website.

Hi Donna
The bull I have been told about is a non-chondro carrier, they just do not like the owner. LOL
