Hello! I am new to the farm/homestead lifestyle. I just moved to a 9 acre piece of land, most of which is fairly wet pasture. Soon I will be getting a Dexter from my father in law who breeds them down the road a ways. I am excited to learn to milk her but in all honesty I dont know what im doing haha. I am learning as i go and learning from my father in law (he doesnt milk his.) I am sure i will have lots of questions.

Hey Owen, welcome to the board. I'm not far from you....Beavercreek, Oregon, which is about 20 miles SE of Portland. I know you'll enjoy your Dexter. One little piece of adviceX would be to get your girl a companion as soon as you can...as herd animals they really do better when not alone. If she is bred, then a calf will be along to fill that role soon enough. There are some great people here and many are very knowledgeable on milking. Best of luck! Dave

We were debating keeping her where she is until she calves. Unless of course we can keep sheep with her so she has some inter species friends.

Welcome! Congratulations on getting your first Dexter. Our first one had 2 horses for companions, although she had been with horses before we got her.

Hi Owen, glad you posted here. You'll learn a lot here and have some really good breeders in your area with lovely cattle. Good luck!

Hi, from Holly Rock Ranch we too live in Washington state but on the other side of the mountain's in Oroville that is in north eastern WA. We show and milk our cattle. I got my first Dexter's from Monica Dexter of RdoubleD acres, back in 2012 I purchased Sinclair at 8 months old and Allie as a pregnant 4 years old cow. Allie was bred to Llanfair's Philbert and a month later she gave us a beautiful heifer calf we named RdoubleD Peek A Boo the birthing went so easy. We live in a rural place only about 1200 people so that made it hard to find other breeders close. The first year I did not get the girls bred. So in the beginning of 2013 I purchased a 8 month old bull calf Elemental Helios from Tanya Garcia at Elemental farms. Helios is an AI breeding out of Bella Fourche Rousseau. We got a beautiful heifer calf and a awesome bull calve this spring 2014 out of Helios. It is good your father in-law lives by you for any help you might need. Welcome to Dexter's the big cow in a tiny package we love the breed. The nice thing is you have access to some great people breeding and showing Dexter's in your area. Good luck and Happy Holidays.
