I have a couple cows that just calved 2 weeks ago today. Due to the weather and some fencing issues, I haven't been able to get the bull out yet. How long do I have to get him out before I'm at risk for him to breed the cows? I noticed today he tried to mount one of the cows, but she wouldn't stand. He was sniffing and curling up his nose.

They have a false heat about 10 days after the calf. I have read that cows have dropped calves as soon as 10 1/2 months after calving. There is a good site called keeping a family cow that has loads of information. I pull my bull out before they calf, I like to give them a rest time, and I don't like the cows being bothered by the bull so soon.
I used see the wrong word, false heat. I knew they can get bred.

Arlen,
Cows typically will have a "silent heat" about 8 or 9 days after calving, and they may get bred accidently if they are still in with a bull. This is not a "false heat", because the cow actually can ovulate and conceive at this time. If she does conceive, she will calve again in about 283 days.
Normally it's best to wait until at least 30 - 45 days after calving before putting the cow together with a bull.

Thanks for the info. I was able to get him out this morning. I don't think there was any breeding going on yet.
