So sorry! We lost a young steer to lightning last week. It is devastating!

Thanks, guys.
Someone locally lost seven cattle to a lightning strike last month. The cattle were also sheltering under a tall oak tree. The thing is that those oaks are the best shade in any pasture. Any little breeze makes it more pleasant than the best man-made shelter.

I am so sorry that happened to your cow. A small consolation is that she wouldn't have known anything. The poor things shelter under trees in storms not knowing the risks like us humans do.

Alicia, very sorry for your loss. Lightning storms in Florida are way to frequent.

Thanks, everyone. It's that time of year. Strong afternoon storms. I moved the herd to opposite side of the farm. They are subdued and quiet. Her weaned calf was in another pasture, so she is still calling occasionally. The others know she's gone. Fiona has been her best buddy since they grew up together. She's a little more quiet than the others. Perhaps a little extra attention for her. We decided to keep a cow we bought back recently, so I guess we'll still have one dun cow in the herd.
