You might want to start a new thread as this one is about PHA. Here in the US are far as I know we only have BD1 chondro. No BD2. I'm sure someone else will chime in and clarify things for you.

outofthebox,
The BD2 mutation is not talked about alot because its old news. Most Dexter breeders in Australia and New Zealand already know about it and testing for it is routine. There is an article concerning this that was published in the December 2003 (Issue No. 3) of "The International Dexter", authored by Nancy Edge of New Zealand. Here is an excerpt:
"The Australian research team identified two mutations -- one occurring worldwide, and a second occurring only in New Zealand and Australia (New Zealand Mutation), which has been linked to Meadowpark bloodlines. The origin of the NZ mutation is believed to go back to the Red Poll/Jersey foundation cattle used in Meadowpark's upgrade programme, as none of the English AI bulls used in the early days are known to have sired any bulldog calves."
"Meadowpark was the first stud to breed significant numbers of pure-bred Dexters in New Zealand. They collected semen (1 bull - Meadowpark Charles) and embryos to expand the number of pure-breds and it was the only source of pure-bred Dexter cattle at the time. Another breeder founded his stud on the Meadowpark cattle and multiplied the bloodline even further through extensive semen and embryo collection activity. The only other source of pure-bred Dexter in the early days was through imported semen."
Hope this answers your question.

Thanks Patti - but its not old news to those who are new to the breed. And most Dexter owners in Australia DONT know about it. Oh NEED TO CLARIFY - they have heard of BD2 but didnt quite know the exact history which is what I was looking for.
And testing for BD2 looks optional from the testing form (sure there are those who will clarify) but Im not really sure as we do our testing at UCD except for MiP+PV for registration. [li]MiP Microsatellite Profile, NO parentage analysis (previously DNA) [/li]
[li]MiP+PV Parentage Verification with Microsatellite Profile (previously DNA+PV) [/li]
[li]BD1 Chondrodysplasia Test 1 (BD1) [/li]
[li]BD2 Chondrodysplasia Test 2 (BD2)[/li]

There is a tendency on the part of too many oldies to assume prior knowledge, but I don't believe that the history of BD2 is not well understood as the information is readily available to those who seek it.
(DCAI: There is no regulatory requirement for Chondrodysplasia testing until an application for multiple ownership registration is made at which time the requirements of all regulations pertaining to multiple ownership come into effect.)
There is obviously no requirement for the multiply owned animal to be free of chondro, just that all owners are informed of the chondro status of the animal they own shares in.
Testing for BD2 is not warranted if the animal is not descended from Meadowpark Charles. Testing for BD2 in any Dexter who does not have Meadowpark Charles breeding would be a futile excercise.
(DCAI: 6.1.7 All bulls being registered must be free of the Pulmonary Hypoplasia and Anasarca(PHA) gene through genetic testing of the animal or its antecedents. An annotation of “Free by Inheritance” in the Herdbook means that the genetic testing of antecedents proves the animal to be free of the gene.)
PHA is not just a status requirement. Only PHA-free bulls will be accepted for registration in Australia.

Donna, refer to your post and replies under the Dexter Cow, Dexter Genetics on June 12, 2013, when you were posting as Lindon. This was covered there, and if you want to continue, needs to move elsewhere, as it's off topic. c.
