I assume this is possible, but I cannot find the information for anything but cows and calves. What is the process? I am looking at a PDCA registered bull and want to know what I am getting into as I need an ADCA registered bull.

The ADCA registration requirement for bulls depends on when the bull was born. If the bull was born on or after January 1, 2010, then his sire's genotype must be on file with either Texas A&M or UC-Davis and he must be genotyped and "Sire Qualified". If the bull was born prior to January 1, 2010, then he can be registered with the ADCA if he is genotyped and his genotype is "on file" with either Texas A&M or UC-Davis. You will need to send a copy of the genotype lab test report, with an ADCA registration application and a copy of his PDCA pedigree certificate, to the ADCA Registrar, to register him. If you have additional questions, please contact the ADCA Registrar at: adcaregistrar@gmail.com

Thanks Patti. Since he was born after 2010 I could register him if I get him genotyped or would he and his sire both need to be genotyped?

In order for a bull to be "Sire Qualified", both he and his sire needs to be genotyped and then his genotype compared to his sire's genotype at the same approved lab (either Texas A&M or UC-Davis). That is the minimum requirement. Many breeders are now making sure that their breeding bulls are "Sire and Dam Qualified" by comparing the bull's genotype to both his Sire's genotype and his Dam's genotype, providing full parentage verification, prior to registration. We do this with all of our registered breeding stock (bulls and heifers) even though it is not required yet. We also test for PHA and Chondrodysplasia prior to registering breeding stock (bulls and heifers) even though that is also optional. Here is what it looks like on the animal's ADCA Online pedigree: www.dextercattle.org/pedigreedb/ponyweb.cgi?horse=018637&OwnerName=Patti%20Adams&SearchFor=1&Page=1&Sort=0
