When he is courting a cow, does your bull make little whining noises? Our bull, Armstrong, goes through all the normal courtship rituals, and if given all the proper signals, he follows his chosen cow around like a puppy. However, just before he thinks about mounting, he puts his head on her back and whines at the cow a few times. If she isn't ready, she walks off.

not sure I would call it a whine, but I know what you are talking about and yes ours does it. I thought they all did.

I believe that most, if not all, bulls do this. By making this sound, the bull is letting the cow know that he is ready to mate, and asking the cow if she is also. If she isn't ready, she moves away. When she is ready, then she stands still and allows the bull to mount her. It saves the bull the exertion of getting up on his hind legs (no easy task for a mature bull) until the right moment.

It's embarrassing to admit but one of our bulls sounds just like a donkey. The neighbors even thought we had gotten a donkey. :-0

A donkey? LOL! Ours has this quiet little whine that he does. It's as if he's asking, "please?".

I think that the sound that littlecowfl is referring to is the small noise (sounds kind of like "eh, eh, eh") that the bull makes before attempting to mount the cow. This is a different sound than the loud noises he typically makes when he is proudly announcing himself to the world and any females in the general vicinity.

And what do you call those loud noises, Patti? Correctly, I mean. I call what our bull does "hooting" because "bellow" sounds more aggressive than what he does. He actually sounds something like a fog horn!

Susan, Most of the loud bull noises are called "bellows". You'll have fun listening to different bull sounds on this sound effects link: www.pond5.com/sound-effects/1/bull.htmlYou can even purchase the sounds and use them on your phone or for special occasions. Patti

Thanks, Patti. So "bellowing" it is, although compared to some of those Pond 5 bulls, he does "hoot." Those were great, I did enjoy listening to them! The first one is what our bull usually sounds like. I played the 5th one, and my daughter said, "He's purring!" Being a cheapskate, instead of buying one of those it occurred to me to go out when Siobhan is ready for dinner and record her as my phone's voicemail . . . but I actually DO want people to call me! She is VERY loud, and if that greeted everyone who tries to leave me a message, I'm afraid my friends would stop calling. However, if I start getting plagued by telemarketers, I just might do it!
