Update on Wellie, and marion, if you want to move this to the health section, feel free.
First, here's a photo of that "ball" of tissue that's protruding from the incision. I took it last night, and he didn't want me near his nether parts, so I had to blow it up a bit. (Sorry about the size, but it's a tinypic link, and this is the only one that works for me for some reason.) Never having seen a recently castrated calf, I'd be glad for any opinions on whether this is normal.
Wellie seems to have turned the corner. I took his temp this morning, and it was 100.6° (30° outside), although he jumped around, so the thermometer might not have been in quite far enough. That does lead me to believe, however, that in yesterday's 24°, his temp was actually over the 103.9° that registered. That's also what the vet thought.
He was up eating hay today when we went out. He tried to get away from us, which he didn't do yesterday. DH will be gone again today, so I went ahead and gave him Banamine while I had help holding him, just to be sure he's not in pain today and keeps eating. However, as much as he jumped around over the needle, I feel sure that was his last one. He had a really good poop and had nursed.
I could see more drainage coming out around the ball of tissue protruding from the incision, although the drainage wasn't fresh.
Finally, I put oregano oil on the exposed tissue and edges of the incision, and I learned that in future I'll use gloves. It ran under my rings and into a small scratch on top of my hand and started itching like crazy. I sincerely hope it doesn't affect Wellie like that! Pretty sure it didn't, because it was driving me crazy as I left the barnyard, and he was just calmly walking around to keep a safe distance from big, bad, mean us. That in itself speaks volumes to me about the fact that he's doing better.
Thanks again for all the input!
