I know she is pretty close, but I mean, is it going to be tonight?
Our Dexter cow Clarabelle has a swollen bag and vulva, with some mucus discharge. She has been like that since Thursday or Friday. For the last hour, she has been mounting our heifer, and also pushing her around head to head?
Does this mean labor is definitely imminent, or definitely a few days off? Or does it mean nothing at all?

Here is a picture of her from a few days ago. It doesn't show anything useful, but I know we like pictures. Its hard to get details of black cows to show up in pictures. This is her second calf, but our first. We bought her bred. Attachments:

I am pretty sure he heifer (in the background of he picture) is in heat. She is standing for the steer, too.

bja105, I couldn't get the tag function on KFC to work so I'll do it here with the same advice. I would separate your cow from the heifer and steer for calving. I usually separate mine a week or two before. Last year we had a sweet heifer in with the cow, who was dominant, but when the cow calved the heifer tried to mount her. Luckily she didn't hurt the calf, and we were there to get her out. Someone told about having a bull and steer in with a cow, and they both tried to mount her after she calved, and they trampled the calf to death. Better safe than sorry! Here's a post I did when one of our cows had her second calf last year, along with some links to other calving signs. Hope it helps!

It just means the heifer is in heat. Its hard to tell just by the discharge. Some will have a lot for a while before calving others seam to have very little. by its self just an indication she is getting closer not necessarily a specific time frame. watch for her to start separating herself maybe picking out a favorite spot in a corner. Watch for restlessness getting up and down often. yes like the picture she is a pretty girl.

Thanks all. No progress, she is still with the herd. I did make a new paddock to separate her. I'll probably move her tomorrow.
