cddexter - Wes Patton is not on the ADCA Board, or running for regional director, or serving on any ADCA committee - he is just an ADCA member that is having a herd production sale and advertising it in the ADCA Bulletin. Nothing more, nothing less. The over reaction to this is uncalled for. Harboring bitterness and anger at a person for things done 10+ years ago doesn't accomplish anything for anyone. Put your headphones on and listen to some words of wisdom from the next generation, Don't Get Bitter, Just Get Better: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsVhayZsVtASo Patti, which one is your daughter.

Talking about your wild fires, did you see where a contingent of Australian rural fire fighters have flown over to help. Apparently they are very experienced in fighting fires in the conditions of your current fires. Hope they all come home safely. And so appreciated. We have teams of Canadian and New Zealand firefighters working in the Northwest as well. There have been deaths among our US firefighters. Firefighters are are in our thoughts and prayers in this time. Young American men have lost their lives in these fires. I think most of the focus is on maintaining defensible containment around homes and the most valuable assets. Hopefully, that reduces some of the risk.

I'm feeling communicative for a change! Mostly I prefer not to communicate online at all, and I don't use Facebook.
I just want to say how very much I appreciate this Dexter site and the ability to search by topic and learn from it. I don't usually log in, but I do visit regularly and follow some conversations.
Susan, I particularly appreciated all the work you did taking and sharing the precalving & birthing photos on your webpage. We've already had one chocolate bull calf (McCalfy)in March (now dehorned & a steer). We loved watching how the other heifer and steer helped look after the welfare of the little fellow in the first couple of weeks, working as a herd.
We've another calf due very soon to our red heifer. Her udder is filling.
We're really enjoying these animals and learning from them how to relate to them, at the same time showing we're in charge and we make sure the bottom-of-the rung heifer doesn't miss out on her treats. We learnt some of that behaviour management (which we were nervous about since we were relatively new to cattle) from reading on this site, thank you.
My husband has completed the timber yards adapting designs from various places (including Temple Grandin's so there aren't sharp corners) and he's put the crush on a concrete slab. It's been a big project including his revisiting welding skills for the gates. The yards worked pretty well when we, along with an interested neighbour dairy farmer, used them.
I didn't think I'd like electric fencing but we're using it for our internal fencing for rotational grazing, and we really appreciate it as it's so flexible. Gradually we'll put in 2 wire electric fencing for most of it, but the yearling height treadins are handy while we work out what works best.
They eat a lot don't they!
Kind regards to all. Mary Anne
