Hi all! I have read several threads in regards to A2 bulls, but can not seem to find the lists/links that people refer to. Can someone help me out? I am in Ontario, Canada and have one cow, and am in the process of purchasing 2 registered young heifer calves that will eventually be bred AI. I appreciate the advice. Thanks!

Ironwood Farm, here's a link to the ADCA AI sire list. You have to scroll down and look because not all of them have their A2 status listed. There are only four bulls listed on the Canadian Dexter Association website. It looks like you have to contact the individual people for more information as none is listed on the site. Belle Fourche Mr. Right is the only name on both lists, but it doesn't list his A2 status.

Thanks, zephyrhillsusan...I had seen that list. The bulls listed on the CDCA site does not make up an exhaustive list of what we can/cannot use. I have just bred my cow with HIYU Renown Magician semen, and I own a few straws of Riverhill Saturn's Galaxy (thanks to Marion!) both of whom are very acceptable AI bulls as far as the CDCA goes. I don't even know if they are A1 or A2, and I am not sure where to find this information! I know that a friend's bull was sired by HIYU Saturn's Warlord who is A2/A2. I guess I was just hoping to find a list *somewhere* that tells who is and isn't. I would like to be informed before I purchase my next round of semen straws

Ironwood Farm - Riverhill Saturn's Galaxy is Beta Casein A1/A2. He has some offspring that tested A2/A2, and others that tested A1/A2, out of cows that tested A2/A2.

Ironwood Farm, you've got some good bulls there! I once made the mistake of letting go of a Taco heifer because she was A1/A2 and I wanted A2. If I were you, I'd use the semen from those excellent bulls and then when it's gone, work on the beta casein. That's a pretty easy fix, and I would think you'd have plenty of market for offspring of Hiyu Renown Magician and Riverhill Saturn's Galaxy, regardless of their beta casein status. cddexter, was Renown Magician tested for beta casein?

not by me. Didn't exist in those days. Marion Clements might know, or Patti, who tests everything for everything. cheers, c.

I haven't tested Hiyu Renown Magician, ADCA No. 10108, for Beta Casein type. I submitted a semen sample and paid to genotype him at Texas A&M (Accession Number is 25848), and I also tested him for the PHA (Shorthorn variant & Dexter variant) at Agrigenomics (back when that was the only lab in the US doing the test), he is a PHA non-carrier for both of the known PHA mutations.

Warlord, out of the same cow, is A2/A2, so he'd have to be at least 1/2 A2. If Rambler II was tested, then you'd have an idea of the other half. c. Marion pointed out that I made a b00boo. Oleander could have been A1/A2, and Warlord inherited the A2. Guess you'll have to test. me
