We had two cows bred via AI last year and they both slipped their calves. It was disappointing. We used a different AI tech this year and just had them bred back. This guy was awesome. He had us give a mineral shot them a month before and a bag of Concept Aid (which we will keep using as our loose mineral). Our cows were in good health, but the mineral supplementation really put a nice bloom on their coats. We used their natural heat cycles by using a sticker above their tail head that changes color when they are mounted by another cow. It worked better than observation because I would have missed the standing heat in one cow without it. This is the third time we've AI'ed any of our cows and our experience with this tech was completely different than the first two times. He raises Angus show cattle, so he really knows his business. The first experience was a nightmare and I had to play detective to figure out which straw the tech actually used (long story). Then, last year, we sent them off to another farm to be AI'ed and paid much more. This time, the gentleman came to our farm, let us do the shots we could, and he took us through the protocol very easily. Two of our cows are older (12 and 10), so we will see. We also have a clean up bull this time that will go in with the cows next month. We will know by when the calves are born as to whether they are AI or pasture bred. Now, we wait eagerly.

Best of luck to you. I love our Dexter bulls, but would like the option to AI we just can't find anyone qualified to do it.

Our tech swears his conception rates are much better when the cows are given mineral supplements beginning a month prior to breeding. Our cows had quality loose mineral available, but the Concept Aid stuff seems to be better. Plus, whatever was in that mineral shot our tech gave them.

We have an awesome AI tech also. It was so easy breeding two cows in early 2016, that we decided to go "all out" for the next go around. We are at an amazing 100% conception rate (which I probably just jinxed) without doing anything special to their diet. We're just trying to be very vigilant. I feel like a kid in a candy store!

otf- I think that's it. We are deficient in most everything on this sandy farm, but even offering a good free choice loose mineral didn't get them as ready as that shot and the other supplemental mineral.
poco- Awesome!

I hope our little discussion is helpful to those considering AI.

If you have the set up and you can catch that window, boy! How awesome!

Legendrockranch, One thing that are AI Tech suggested was that if you own your own straws, you can use two straws instead of one to increase the possibility of conception. There is a difference in quantity between AI and natural breeding. Doubling the amount of semen gets you closer to what a bull would do (bulls will breed a cow several times during her window).

We used AI for the first time this year on a heifer and a cow. Both took with one straw. Now I have extra straws for next year. I was afraid the tech would charge me to store them but he was happy to do it. I also bought a bred cow and bred heifer so four calves with three different bulls. Should be interesting.

I have had mine AI'd also, one took, the other didn't.....Both at different times.....Haven't tried it for a long time...But my AI tech is excellent...He has a degree in husbandry( cattle)....He has a lot of degrees in ag, and farm animals.....Very smart man....Usually has a very high % of AI success....He is storing my straws for free also....I still have straw from Lasair, Mr. Right, and Rousseau....Thinking I may use Mr.Right on one of my cows and a heifer....Sure would like for at least one of those to take....But I cheat, I have to do the Synchronized method, do to my situation....Unable to watch my cows for heat cycles....I'd like to buy some new straws too....

One of our heifers is due any day now. Heifers can be so tricky when they are just about ready. She is crossing her legs, apparently.
