I have a poster from the 1987 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (Toronto), at the time one of the very few BIG agricultural events in Canada. Livestock, poultry, produce and a nightly international horse show, with competitors from all over the world: hackney classes, four-in-hand coaching classes, teams of international jumpers (this is long before Spruce Meadows), it was THE posh agricultural showcase.
Surely it wasn't that long ago? Surely I'm not really that old? That was the first year Dexters were on display as a new (again) breed in Canada. At the time, exhibitors had to stay for the full 12 days of the Fair. I asked if it would be possible at the end of the Fair to get one of the display posters that dotted the grounds, lots of hmmm's, and when most people and stock gone, cleanup underway, I came back to the display to find a four foot high roll of plastic at the back of the booth. OH! I was hoping for one of the 2 x 3 cardboard ones, but here was a 4 x 6 plastic poster, one of the few big expensive ones, no note, just...there. I still have it, framed, taking up most of a wall in the office. Memories...

Carol, can you post a photo of the poster? Would like to see it! (Yeah, 30 years goes by quickly, doesn't it?)

Hi Gale. Love to. Don't have a cel phone, can't get the camera battery to work, have to go in to the shop to get it fixed. They are $30 each and I'm too cheap to just replace it. I looked on the internet but can't find the poster anywhere. Did find 1988 for sale on kijiji, same artist, different picture, smaller size, paper, $100. Hold that thought, though, and I'll get it up as soon as I get the camera working again. Went to the Royal for four years in a row, the last year I was told not to come....long story, short version, the secty of the CDCA had sent an official letter to the Fair board saying I didn't represent Dexters in Canada (not a CDCA member) so the assn. didn't want me to exhibit, even though I was telling inquiries all about Ontario owners, and none of the Ontario owners were interested in being there as "I can sell everything I have as it is, why would I bother?", forgetting that Directors are supposed to be putting the breed first, not their personal pocketbooks. ...some 10 years later, the then pres went to the Royal, and the same secty waxed eloquent on how wonderful this was, the first Dexters at the Royal. Some people are beyond petty, but whatever makes them feel good... I know I was there, a whole lot of other people know I was there, and I made some lifelong friends from other breeds by meeting them there. I'm good with it. [Edited to add: well, I guess maybe not so good with it, because the pettiness still rankles. Every time I think I've seen it all, up pops another instance. With Richard on the Board of the ADCA, you'll know first hand the CDCA isn't the only place this happens ] Nice to hear from you. I don't see much reference to Richard, is he okay? All the best, c.
