Is the dexter herd shrinking where you are? A while back I noticed that the CDCA herd is about 50% of what it was 15 years ago judging from registrations and membership. My herd of 5 is now the largest in our province and I am basically the only active registered breeder here. For a few years now, most registered dexters bring the same dollar value either as beef or as breeding stock. This year I have seen a bit more interest in the breed, so I've been considering a possible solution: Never Charge Extra for Registration (i.e. don't sell unregistered unblemished live animals) Pros: - Increases national herd size
- Encourages potential membership from among your clients
- Increases the "herd" of breeders who have limited resources (i.e. buy back best heifers from your clients who become shareholders in your expanded "herd")
Cons: - Maintains (but does not improve) overall herd quality
- Requires disclosure of intentions to clients to remain above board
I've also considered proposing that CDCA add a mechanism (or penalty?) to discourage breeders from charging their clients extra for registrations and transfers. One price regardless of whether the buyer wants the animal registered or not. There is no need for breeders to effectively discourage membership in the association.
Any other thoughts or ideas?
