We got the call today to come pick up this winters steer, His weight was 714.5 lbs this is not a scale weight it is an approximate weight. We arrived at this number by dividing his hanging weight 443 lbs. by .62. He was 19 months old. He had a nice layer of fat and graded choice but he could have been better. We will get him Monday, already got the charcoal on the grill ready to be fired up. This animal was forage fed from forage fed Sire and Dam.
Edit; I should add the cost after all cutting and wrapping comes to 2.15 per lb.

I don't understand how you came up with the live weight, I've had them vary from 60% to 52% hanging weight. Didn't the butcher weigh him when he was checked in, or did you do the at home butcher?? P.J.

Maybe my explanation was not as clear as I thought it was. It was cold and I wanted to get him to the packer as quick as possible so we did not drive across the scale at the elevator. Our slaughter house does not weigh the live animal but does give you a formula that for lack of a better term is a rule of thumb. They do know the hanging weight and that was 443 lbs now using a calculator divide that number by point 62 or .62 you get 714.5 and that is how we arrived at the approximate live weight. Or you could call it an estimate live weight. Now I don’t know if we actually got 62% of the animal in cut and wrapped meat and I thought the animal looked closer to 800 lbs. Regardless whether it was 714 or 800 we got 443 lbs hanging from a 19 month old forage fed steer that according to the onsite state inspector graded choice. We put up some of the best alfalfa hay the 3rd cutting of 09 that I have ever put up and that is primarily what he got free choice with all the pasture he wanted. We planted our pastures specifically for cattle growth and the hay fields are the same, hay for cattle growth. It is 16 lbs Alfalfa. 8 lbs.Orchard. 8 lbs Timothy per acre. Hope I got it that time.
