We just brought a new bull to our farm and his eyes are watering really bad. It just looks like tears, it is not goopy or colored. Any ideas of what this could be? Should I be worried? Thanks.

Continuous discharge from the eyes -- tears or anything else, that is apparent on the face of the animal, can be a sign of irritation, disease, or injury. If you can, put the bull in a squeeze chute and head gate, then inspect each eye closely for redness, foreign object, or injury. If you don't have the facilities to do this or don't feel confident in doing this -- take him to the vet and have the vet do it. Don't wait until it gets worse or infected.

If you had straw or other bedding in the trailer that he was hauled in, it may have caused it. We get excessive eye watering if the hay is dusty or has cheatgrass or other weeds in it. The small seed of some grasses also irritates the eyes. If it is clear and absent of pus give it a couple days.

My cattle get this, if I don't put sea kelp out for them. The cattle love the kelp, if go too long w/out it, they fight when it does get put out.

Thanks for all your information. After a couple days it had cleared up completely. I think it may have been the hay in the trailer we brought him home in.
