Just lost a cow to this. She was about 4 months pregnant. Opened her up and she had about 30-40 gallon of embrionic fluid in her cavity. The calf appeared normal, about the size of a baby pig. The vet said the odds are 1 in 7500 of a cow getting this. If you ever have a cow that looks too big for her pregnancy you might want to google this.

I am SO sorry for your loss. I've read that Hydrops fetalis is associated with PHA. Was this the type of hydrops she had?
My heart goes out to you both for your loss.

No Barb she was tested PHA free. We have a bloodline from Uneweep's Kay Cee that we introduced into our herd and have nothing but nightmares with calving from him. Don't know if he is to blame but most of the cows from this lineage were slaughtered and are no longer in our herd.

Oh, I'm so sorry you lost her and her calf. That is such a hard thing to face, for your herd and personally. Thank you for giving us the info you have so that we can be more informed. =(

I have photos from last year that were sent to me from England the day of birth of an aborted calf I would have sworn was a "waterbaby" with PHA. It was the second one in the herd in a short period of time and it came from Woodmagic lines. I was astonished when it wasn't PHA. I think it turned out to be hydrops too.
There was an AI bull in England in the old bloodlines behind Woodmagic and Doesmead that has been said to be a carrier of hydrocephalus. I wonder if there is a scientific connection between that and PHA? Some mutant version?

Thanks Gene for the comments! We are fortunate in that culling of a genetic line in our herd is less traumatic than someone who finds a problem in a small herd. We feel that as a breeder who puts 50 calves a year into the dexter herd it is our responsibility to find and isolate problems. By doing this it is our problem not an unknowing new owner. We have cows in our herd that carry all the good traits one looks for. but don't behave to our standards. We are able to breed these traits out with the right bull and have docile calves that are quite gentle. If and when these cows are culled they will be hamburger not someone elses problem. We like you want the dexter breed to benefit from us owning some of them.

For the most part it's always the larger herds that take the most hits, especially financially. Thank you Scott & Judy for doing the right thing, leading by example.
