Dun is considered a wild coat pattern in horses. It made me wonder about the Dexter dun coloration and it's link to the old Celtic cattle. Anyone know if they were dun?

Alicia..couple of things... Dexter color is (so far) unique to the breed vs. other cattle breeds that look dun. My understanding is indiginous cattle were black, celtic cattle brought in red, roman cattle brought in white. There are certainly dilute genes involved in the other breeds. Icelandic cattle have been genetically isolated for about 1000 years, and come in all combinations. Who's to say? Good question, tho', but so far no proofs.
I think I remember Phil Sponnenberg telling me that horse colors are different from cattle, but it's so long ago I don't remember why. Maybe a feeler to Sheila Schmutz at the U of Saskatchewan would prove fruitful? Or, you could contact John Potter, who has every color and combination available, and has some startling info on those combinations, even beyond what Sheila has predicted.
