OK, I'm in North Central Louisiana. I'm wanting a Dexter for a family milker. We have found 2 to look at south of us. One is 3 and the other is 2. If there is not anyone close with a bull can I find someone to do AI on a Dexter? What other breed can they be bred too, if any?
Thank You

Jersey/Dexter crosses are called Belfair. Some sell for as much or more than a registered Dexters. www.miniaturejerseyassociation.com/BreedingProgram.htmPersonally, I think Dexter semen is too expensive and not readily available. I think I found one semen distributor that carried semen of one Dexter bull. Frankly, keeping a dexter bull is easy. They have very good temperament. Also, they become sexually mature early, as early as 6-8 months old, and when the job is done, you can butcher one for meat. The bull market is flooded, so don't let anyone overcharge you for a bull calf. The only problem with a Dexter bull calf is, you don't always know what kind of milk traits he'll pass on to his heifers. On the other hand, the offspring will yield more meat than a Dexter/jersey cross. I wish I could help you out with a milk cow, since I'm not that far away, but I don't think I can part with any one of mine. Two of them are older cows, over 14, and I promissed myself to spear them anymore change and let them die in peace on our farm. The other is 5 and is my cream sourse. And Gusty is my first time heifer that is special because she's out of one of my old cows, who rarely has heifers. Gusty is also unrelated to our bull, which is convenient. But if money gets tight, Gusty will be the one I'd sell.

I went to the ADCA website last week & clicked on AI Bulls & ordered Semen from one of the breeders listed there. I found an AI tech by calling the local farms off of the www.realmilk.com website, just started calling all the farms with cows within 2 hrs of me & one of the farmers gave me the name & phone number of a local tech & that is who the Semen got shipped to. I also had called my local cooperative extension service but I got an answer quicker from calling the local farmers.
