At what weight do you usually breed your Dexter heifers? I have a young heifer that will be a yearling in April. She doesn't look like she is going to be a very tall girl. Do you breed by weight or age? We usually breed our Jersey heifers at fifteen months. Is it the same for Dexters?

I don't think it was me.. I really, realy don't worry about dexters breeding much after they are a year old. I don't find it ideal but I have dealtt with calves out of an 20 month old, Dexter and one that must have been 16 month old. Also one that was around 18 month old. The real young one was bought pregnant (We thought it was open). We preg checked it, thinkig she might be 1 month along and she was 6 months.. It was an oh crap momment...
If you feed them right and everything I would aim for the 15 months on average and not worry to much of they get breed at 13.. So much depends on the heifer, the bull (Some bulls have larger calves than others, as do some cow lines) and even nutrtion of cow during pregnancy and time of year you are going to calf..
