Hello everyone -
I recently acquired a yearling heifer and was somewhat surprised to discover that she has extra teats (more than 4). Searches on this board and others show that this is treated generally as a "nuisance" defect that can be physically corrected by the vet cutting off the extra teats, but that breeding decisions should be made to try to eliminate it from future generations.
Does anybody have information on what lineages of Dexters tend to carry spur teats? Is the characteristic generally passed only maternally, only paternally, or both? Is it a recessive trait that requires a double copy to express, and can therefore can be passed forward even in animals that don't express it, or does it have a more complex or unknown inheritance path?
I think Genebo mentioned that extra teats is a long-known issue with Dexters. Does anybody have a sense of what percentage of heifers/cows have them?
Thanks!

I don't have any answers for you but can tell you what I have. 1st cow, Sulu, nice udder no extra teats, 2nd cow, Sulu X Patton = Lil' Rain: extra teats, Lil' Rain X Patton = Ciera: extra teats. I am waiting for Sulu & Lil' Rain to calf any day and they are bred this time with Big John so I'm hoping for heifers to compare outcome.

Hello from WA too, I am not sure about lineage for the extra teats. I can say though that at the last fair I showed at (The Puyallup Spring Fair) last April, I was marked down on one of cows because she had an extra teat. It was not something I had ever had done to an animal before. After the show I questioned the judge more on the issue of extra teat/teats. She went on to say that through dairy judging and speaking with dairy producers that they cut them off, and that there seams to be a correlation with extra teats and udder issues later on. I my self have never heard or experienced it. Just some food for though though. By the what part of WA are you from?
