Hi all I have a question: We recently had several of our calves dehorned by our vet. The older one was almost 5 months old. It felt as if her horns hadn't attached yet so we felt safe doing this this time of year. Well, one of them had attached and left her sinus exposed, a hole about the diameter of a small pencil. It drained for about a week, I kept it clean and free of flies and kept it covered with a bandage. It is now dry and she seems to be doing fine. How long should it take for the hole to close in. It will be 2 weeks since this was done. I have not delt with this before. Thanks LizMo

I always hate that part of dehorning. It'll take several weeks for it to close up, my vet always stuffs it with cotton and we keep it soaked with iodine or blue spray, good luck.

It will take a few weeks, crusting over is normal. Just watch for any sign of infection (pus draining, etc) and treat it immediately if you see any indication of infection.

Thanks for the info. I am keeping the hole covered with a clean gauze pad and it's held on with Gorilla tape. Seems to be working well, as the tape is holding. LizMo
