A bunch of questions, The only thing I do know about the Magnets is that they can only get one in their lifetime.
1. At what age do you give your Dexters a Magnet?
2. What shape Magnet do you use?
3. What size Magnet?
4. What brand or where do you buy yours?
5. Any other useful Magnet tips or anything?
6. Does the vet put it in or do you?
Thanks

Wow, I've never given any of my cows a magnet !! The only time I've ever know of giving them one is when they have "hardware" or metal in their stomach, and then the vet does it. Maybe someone else can help out on this one. P.J.

I put magnets in almost every calf. If I am planning on keeping the animal it gets a magnet. It is cheep insurance to help prevent hardware disease. The magnets go into the calves when I give them their first round of vacs. They are shaped like a bolus and I just use the bolus gun to put them down. I have also had the vet do it, it may be good to have them show you how to put it in the first time. A few years ago I butchered a cow that I had since she was a calf, when she got butchered she was about 3 years old, she had a nail attached to the magnet. Who knows where she found the nail. I do not have junk out in my Fields or even boards that may have nails. It is alway interesting to see what they have picked up if you remember to check when they get butchered. You can also reuse the magnets. Here is where you can buy them. www.jefferslivestock.com/ssc/product.asp?CID=2&mscssid=9G0TB1GR8M1K8NTGA8BM75JREXAB6UR8In case the link did not work the brand name is alnimax alnico magnets. If you have older cows and you wonder if they have a magnet in them you can use a compus to detect it.
