Hello everyone I just wanted to introduce myself. My husband and I started out with 2 Dexter Steers 5 yrs ago to "mow" our 10acres. We fell in love with them and that started our passion. We are a very small hobby farm. We have the 2 steers, a 10 yr old cow and a 3 yr old cow. We also have an 8 month old heifer who is a short leg chondro, a 3 week old heifer and a 6 week old bull calf(soon to be a steer). The bull we had is not living with us any more, he lives with his new girls which are Herfords, that belong to a friend of mine. I have found myself with Dexters that have an unkown PHA status. We are in the process of testing all the girls. My 2 older girls do not come from WW line but the calves sire does. I did this research on my own with the great info provided here. So this is where we are, testing for PHA in the 4 girls( I want a paper that says NEG) and looking for a new bull. I really appriciated all the great info. on this board. I look forward to learning even more. Thanks

Thank you both for your kind welcome. I had not heard of PHA until I read about it in a recent PDCA or ADCA journal. Thankfully I only have 4 cows to test.
I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Hi Holly and welcome – nice to see another Dexter owner in Florida!
If it helps you on the PHA research, I went through something similar when we were looking for a replacement cow a couple of years ago. If you go to the ADCA pedigree search page and put in only PHA status “Carrier” you’ll come up with a list of (now) 148 animals tested with positive results reported. (If you’re a member of PDCA, you can also sign in and check PHA status of additional animals.) I worked backward from the carriers to try and see if I could determine which animals coming down through the generations from Wheatear were passing on the gene.
I searched the pedigree of each sire and dam of the listed carrier Dexters for Wheatear. If she was not in the sire’s pedigree, but was in the dam’s, then I could determine that the dam was the carrier that passed on the PHA gene. Likewise, if the dam had no Wheatear connection, than the sire would be the carrier. These sires/dams would then be “obligate” carrier animals - not tested, but proven by their carrier progeny to be carriers themselves. If both sire and dam carried Wheatear genetics, I left them inconclusive for the time being, since either, or both, could carry the PHA gene.
I believe if you keep following the lines back this way, you’ll find that the old Snowbird line in Florida can be highly suspect as some of the Shome animals behind it (down from Cranworth Xanadu breeding) can be shown to be obligate carriers. Likewise, you can see the connection with animals coming down from Cranworth Toby and Cranworth Yanna. Can be pretty interesting.
Very best thoughts coming your way on your test results … And that picture of your “sea cows” is just way too cute! We have manatees up here, too. Jeanne

Hi, not sure if either of you are still on the site. If so I am looking to start a very small herd of Dexters in the Tampa Bay area. We currently have 2 mini jersey heifers (soon to be cows). We'd like to add to females and a bull to our herd as soon as the lower pasture is established (end of 2015).

aneffie53, if you want to be sure someone sees your post you can "tag" them like I did you. If you don't know their tag name (not always the same as the username you see), can click on "Reply" instead of "Quick Reply." Then up above you will see a bunch of icons. One is an @with a person's head and torso. Click on it, and a box will appear that says "Enter Username." In her case you would enter "Hollydzie." Her name will appear in another box with her avatar. Click on it, and she'll be tagged. She'll get a "Notification" telling her where she's been tagged, and that way you can be sure she'll see it. hollydzielittlecowfl is another Florida breeder. Sorry if I missed anyone.

Thank you Dave! Hazel is my one and only "traditional" cow. She does have Bullfinch so I can't claim Legacy LOL. I thought you would get a kick out of that little fact Holly
