Hi Linda; An organic crop grower in this area is using chicken manure from a local battery. We use our own mixed with cow manure for the garden. The NPK of Chicken is 1.1 -.08-.05 whereas cow is .06-.02-.05 so just slightly higher and we use both at the same spreading rate. Liz

Clover, I was going to use it and the County Extention guy said I should have my soil tested to see how much to use. It only cost me $10.00 bucks to get the soil test, and was really well worth it. P.J.

Oh yeah, I got that again and I don't really need anything at all this year because all the fertilizer we put down last year basically SAT there because of the drought last year, plus I seeded a bazillion dollars worth of clover and I don't really want a lot of N but a little is okay, the P and K are the ones still sitting there. The magnesium and calcium are high too and I really do need those, or at least my cows do, and the pasture specialist says they're "plating up" and chicken manure contains boron which "unlocks" those somehow. Anyway. He just hasn't returned my email (from yesterday) and I'm an impatient type so I wanted to fish around and see what you all thought about chicken manure. I've seen recommendations 4 - 10 tons an acre which seems like a lot and I don't know if I can stand the smell of that much chicken poop.

I went (timidly because those big boys can be quite scary) over to Cattle Today forum and found this on Chicken Litter.
"Get in the truck right now and go pay him for two tons to the acre on every acre you have in grass. Then get all your equipment you left in the field out before the grass grows over it hides it. Chicken litter is great stuff. I here it will grow grass on a rock."
I guess that answers my question. Haha!

Hi Linda,
I know some horse people that won't buy hay that's fertilized with chicken manure, not sure why. Even though the practice of using antibiotics on poultry for growth and health has gone way down, some growers might still use it. After all what goes in must come out ;D
