Just wondering if people could tell me how many laboratories there are in America/Canada that are used to test Dexters for DNA + PV, BD1/2 and PHA?
If you could give me the actual company names would be wonderful.

Regards Kathleen To interpret into Americanese, it think that BD1/2 = Bulldog 1 and 2 = Chondro1 and Chondro2 while PV = Parentage Verification I don't believe ANY labs in North America offer the Chondro 2 test, but I suppose I could be wrong. There are at least two labs that offer Parentage Verification, and PHA, and Chondro 1. Both labs are University based. Texas A&M = Official Lab of the ADCA UC Davis = another lab used by many folks

Below is a link to the ADCA testing info and what tests Texas A&M does. www.dextercattle.org/adca/adca_testing.html Here is a link to UC Davis and what test are available through them: www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/cattle.phpAs far as parentage verification, both labs do them however the ADCA has Texas A&M as it's main lab, if PV is done though UC Davis, reports plus $5.00 must be sent "lab to lab" to Texas A&M At this time since we do not have BD2 here in the states we do not test for it. However I have heard that UC Davis is getting ready to start running that test also. I'm not sure about Texas A&M. Barb Haha, just realized you beat me to the post Kirk.

Kathleen,
The Legacy Registry began the Dexter cattle "Forever" database of DNA samples at the University of California-Veterinary Genetics Laboratory in 2004. At that time there was NO other lab in the US that Dexter registries were using for their testing as all samples were being sent to Canada. Over the next few years Legacy/UCD began offering the first non-commercial testing for the A2 beta casein and added Chondrodysplasia testing the next year, and PHA just after that. Legacy provided the FIRST opportunity for Dexter breeders to obtain all tests available in the breed, at prices less than half the going rate elsewhere, and from one sample at one location. Recently, UCD and Legacy are offering the new polled test which determines if a Dexter is carrying one gene or two for polled.
International Dexter owners are welcome to test through Legacy, and there is at least one member on this forum from New Zealand that has been using the service. It is a simple matter. Legacy emails an import form and that is filled out and sent along with the sample. Once the sample arrives at the lab you can usually expect results within 7 business days. The Legacy system is simple, expedient, economic and there has been no negative feedback from users.
The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory - University of California is an accredited laboratory, member of ISAG and reports results to ISAG standards. This is NOT the case with other labs doing Dexter testing. ( Which creates some issues with parentage confirmations). UC-Davis reports on 16 markers, more than any other lab, and this works to the benefit of other labs when the DNA test is transferred. The ISAG panel is 11 markers. VGL is a world renowned laboratory and they developed the DNA testing in cattle in the 1950's and they have been archiving cattle samples and results for owners since. DNA testing in animals has been their primary focus although they also do forensic DNA for legal authorities and others. The laboratory is part of the University of California education system and is overseen by the regents of the University. This is also not the case with other labs in the US doing Dexter testing - most of which are commercial for-profit labs that answer to stock holders.
UC Davis tests for DNA panel of 16 markers and also will do parentage confirmation either with contemporary or archived samples. Tests are:
Chondrodysplasia. They currently test for BD/1 but I know they are familiar with the BD/2 as there was a recent interesting case in the mini jersey breed which had some discussion relative to BD/2.
PHA -
A2 Beta Casein. ( First lab licensed to test non-commerical by A2 Corp because of their experience and reputation).
Color testing
Polled test.
Everything available at one location from one sample with the best prices available in the US and perhaps in the world!
