Probably mites or lice...it's that time of year and the pesky critters are looking for a warm place to hide.

There are a variety of products you can use. Most pour-on wormers treat lice (just make sure you check the label). This includes products like Cydectin and Ivomec.
Another option is to spray them with a solution that kills lice. Again, there are a lot of products out there. We use this method to reduce flies and most of the solutions kill lice also.

I like the Cydectin pour on. The container has a dosage chamber built onto the side. Cydectin doesn't hurt the dung beetles. If your cows are gentle they may let you walk up to them and pour it onto their back... some of mine will allow this and some I have to put into a shoot. LizMo

Apparently a lot of people like Cydectin. Back in October I ordered the 5 litre size to do our cattle. It was backordered. I checked a bunch of other places. They were all backordered. I left the original order in place, still no Cydectin. In late November I caved and purchased some Ivermectin to worm our herd, not so much for worms, but for lice.

Just get UltraBoss pour-on, it'll take care of it. It's for external parasites only.

Hadn't heard of that Olga, thanks! At the time, my choice was buy a whole bunch of little bottles of Cydectin or use the Ivermectin. I tried the less expensive generic stuff, and it seems to work, but I'd rather avoid it if I'm not going for worms.
Some friends swear by Diatomaceous Earth, and we have some, but I'm unconvinced it works on lice because they use it religiously and I know they've had lice in their herd from time to time.
