I was wondering what everyone keeps in their Emergency Kit? I am trying to build mine up a bit more. I have most of the basic stuff, but was wondering what others have found that is useful to keep on hand, or what others wish they HAD had on hand when something happened.
Thanks, Laaci

I think a lot depends on one's level of comfort dealing with various situations, and the availability of a good vet who can respond in a timely manner. For us, we are comfortable dealing with most situations, but not all (like starting an IV). Getting a vet out is VERY difficult for us. Here are some of the items we have on hand:
2 or 3 different antibiotics (Excenel, Nuflour, etc.) Scours medications Calcium tubes (CPMK) Needles & syringes of various sizes Balling gun Antiseptics Calf-puller, lube, etc Probiotics & Vitamin supplements (tubes)
Perhaps most importantly, the phone #'s of folks who can come lend a hand!

I would add to the list a couple of tubes of different sizes along with a cannula (which is a metal tube for the first 14" so the cow doesn't chew the tube) for handling bloat in both adult cows and calves. If you really want to be prepared a trocar (hopefully will never be used) can also be added to the kit. I've had to tube both adults and calves, and twice had to use a trocar for choke. It has saved the life of several of our cows and calves.
