For those of you who use a bander to castrate your bull calves. Could you please tell me what brand you use.
I am looking at the California Bander and the Tri-band bander.
They use a little bit different method from each other, just wondering what your experience has been
Thank you

We use a Wadsworth XL. There are lots of different models out there. This is not an expensive model and I don't have experience using other brands. I'm sure there are some pros and cons with the various models.

Hi Holly, We use the Wadsworth XL Bander and XL Bands for castrating 4-6 month old bull calves and also for dehorning: www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=d2e30cf3-bbdc-4dc9-8c1b-7e0ef1364593&gas=WadsworthXL For larger and more developed bull calves and for dehorning mature animals, we use the Callicrate Bander and loops. With either banding method, we always give the animal that is being banded tetanus anti-toxin (for short-term protection) and tetanus toxoid (for long-term protection) SQ injections to protect from tetanus. Both of these products are available in single dose vials (which is what we use). We've had consistently good results using these banders for castration and for dehorning, but we only do either of these procedures during cold weather (Fall and Winter). I'm a bit concerned that the year-around warm weather in Florida would be a problem for you to try this method. Patti

Dexterfarm, how long do you wait before you cut them? When we bought our first Dexters they were 4 months old and came with the bands already on. They would not fall off. They got kind of gross so I finally twisted them off.
Maybe the woman who banded them did not use small enough bands.
This bull is 7 months old, but he is on the small side. I waited to do him because I thought he might fill out a bit more if I left him intact a little longer.
kansasdexters Thank you for the good info on the Tetanus.
The flies are a problem here. We have them year round. I kept waiting for a really cold snap, but we never got one this year.

I cut off 2 weeks after banding. Just make sure you leave enough below the band so that it will stay on. Some times they are dried up enough that the band does fall off to but if it is healed that much by then thats ok. Just try not to disturb it so if it does need more healing time it can stay on.

Red Ridge
I just want to clarify, I have never done this. I have no personal experience with dehorning using this method. I only read this article a while back and am passing it on to you.
