Here's a picture of Getrude (calf), dad in the back and mom to the left. She finally worked the plug out of the one nipple and everything is going great. Only problem I have now is trying to catch her to put a halter on. Little squirt wont let me near her... i get about 4' away and boom, she's off the the races, lol.

(* Gertrude, not Getrude) ....Question for you guys- How soon will i know if she is polled? Dad is horned (has been dehorned), momma is a polled hereford. Possible the polled gene was dominant? I didnt feel any nubs or anything when i check her over when she was first born.

Hello, it depends on the bloodline, so we have discovered re horns. We had three calves last year and one took a month and a half before moving the hairs to show little buds while the other two were displaying their buds proudly. Yet there they were only weeks apart. We currently have four x 3-4 mth year olds and onlytwo are showing their buds above their hair. There's one with buds underneath and the other has nothing yet. All our moos are horned, there is no polled amongst them. You can pull tail hairs and have this little one tested now for the polled gene if you cant wait to see

I know pics can be deceiving, but did your bull use a stool for breeding? Pretty calf! Joel

In this case no the pic is not deceiving... lol. My dad told me i was going to have to dig a pit so the girls can get in it, haha. But, obviously, somehow... he connected. He is literally a little over 1/2 the height of the hereford girls. He'll be 2 years old this fall, so i dont think he will get much taller... thicken out maybe, but no more height??

Your baby girl will be poll. Polled herefords are homozygous for polling which means all calves from them will be polled, even if bred to a horned bull. Is the father dun? or red? can't tell from the photo. Interesting you got a black calf, so maybe dad is dun. you can feel little bull calves buds usually by a week old, but heifers may be nearly a month old before you can feel them.

Thanks guys. The bull is dunn. I was hoping for a dunn or red calf... i saw a picture on here of a hereford/dexter cross and they were red... really cute, not that our little girl isnt . Like i said above, when i get a chance this weekend, ive got to catch her so i can get a halter on her, with a lead maybe, so i can start working with her... no more shy cows!!!

Your baby girl will be poll. Polled herefords are homozygous for polling Are you sure about this statement? If it were correct than why would the Hereford Association have a test for hetero/homo polled? Barb
