My friend has a jersey cow that is getting older, and she really wants a heifer calf out of her as a replacement. She said she could get sexed jersey semen. Is this a possibility for Dexters? How/where do you find sexed semen straws, and what are the bull options? She would like to breed her Jersey cow to a Dexter bull, but wants to try the sexed semen to get a heifer calf.

Hi Julie,
I currently have a bull at a genetics facility that I am collecting sexed semen from. I did not have any intentions of selling the sexed straws, yet keeping them for myself. Given the expense of the procedure/straws I wasn't sure there would be a market for their purchase. Your are welcome to email me for additional info.

Has anyone had success with the sexing of semen?
When I was reading up about it, they were explaining that all they do is separate the larger soerm from the smaller sperm. They know larger sperm are female. Smaller sperm are males.
But I would say its not 100% as with all that is mother nature, but it does significantly increase the chances of one sex or the other - it's just not a guarantee. And it is expensive

Then there's apple cider vinegar-$5 a gallon. There is some science behind it-an acidic vagina being more "friendly" to female sperm. I've had 2 for 2 heifers, and L.C. is on her second gallon of ACV. I'm hoping for her to come into heat any day. I put a cup a day in her water, she likes it, and it's good for her, so it can't hurt. Dairy farmers use sexed semen all the time, as they want heifers. I think it's exciting to have a technology that you can choose what sex you want from a bull. You might really want a heifer from a particular mating. Has to be a viable way of breeding, otherwise farmers wouldn't do it. Better to have a 90-95% chance of a heifer than a 45% chance when your business relies on heifers. The more common this technology is used the cheaper it will become. I believe they use flow cytometry, not a centrifuge, and the damaged and dead ones are removed during processing. Hey, a healthy bull produces billions each ejaculate, still lots left to work with. Send some sexed dexter straws my way, I'd put them to good use.

Interesting stuff! Thanks for the responses. Eileen, I will email you for some details. I thought it was neat that my friend was interested in breeding her beloved cow to a Dexter bull - guess meeting my Dexters made a good impression! I am glad to know this technology exists - especially for special cases like preserving a specific family line.
