Louise, I do think that SNPs are the gold standard, all the large breed organizations are using it. It's options are unlimited. The problem some see is that microsatellite markers and SNPs are not compatible. Any animal that was tested using microsatellite markers will have to be re-tested to get it's SNP panel. It would be interesting to know how the Uni of Qld was able to convert those animals already tested using microsatellite markers over to SNPs without having an additional expense to the person who was testing.

Hi Barb, I was wrong, just checked up and they do use microsatellite markers for DNA parent verifying. Yes, it would cause a lot of expense trying to convert from microsatellite to SNP. Perhaps this is why they also are not using SNP's for PV'ing. They use the SNP for other genotyping. I wrote from memory instead of checking up first. My apologies. Had to correct that in case I lead anyone up the garden path, I wouldn't want to put misleading info on a public forum. regards Louise

That explains why they also want to know the colour of the sire, dam and offspring then I did wonder if that was for record keeping and/or had a purpose, now I know thanks Genebo

I just received genotype & PV results from Queensland University for the 2013 calf drop and they have changed. They have gone down from 15 markers to 12 markers claiming they have adjusted to the International Society of Animal Genetics standard. Why the marker drop - I have emailed and asked why. Not to mention it has now mucked up the formatting table and calculations in the database Darn inconvenient.

Hopefully they will respond and it will be interesting to learn why they dropped 3 markers. I recently got a report back on a calf from UCDavis and they are still doing 16 markers. take care, LaDena
