We had a family visit Sunday and they'll be new Dexter owners soon. Two heifers and a bull calf. They took many photos, but not so many of the calves turned out because they were too nosy looking for treats. Now that we're getting some apples on the trees they mob us when we reach up into the branches, it's like waving your hand with a bag of chips at the beach with seagulls...lol. Nothing like free treats that they love so much and they're right at hand in the pasture! For those new to cows especially with young children, the Dexters are a more practical choice, but they love how our herd is so gentle and friendly. Our matriarch Highland cow (16 years old now) is always a hit with the visitors.

That's an awesome pic Hans. I expect most folks that visit your farm walk away new dexter owners! I remember a pic of yours that had a kid "practicing" roping on a highland that was lying down. Is this the same one? What a temperament.

That Highland being "roped" was actually her daughter, so that's a great example of how temperament can be inherited. Her Granddaughter is very similar in temperament. Any one of the three we can just walk up to them and milk right in the pasture without restraint. We've managed to carve a niche with families, many of them are home schooled, so there is a lot of word of mouth interest from that community. It's very enjoyable when they come to visit, and I love the look of delight on the kids faces as they get to hug a 4 month old calf, or as in the photo, sit on a full grown cow with such impressive horns as hers are.
