This little guy was born yesterday, and I took this picture while he was still wet. So what do you think? Is he polled? Is he short-legged?

Hard to say at this age about the chondro and with the photo you have. It's better to get a side shot with the calf looking forward. The neck is an important clue.
Was the cow bred to a chondro bull? And is the bull polled? The cow doesn't look to have a polled head.

Since I don't own any carriers what is it about the neck that tells you it's a chondro carrier? I have seen non-carriers with both long and short necks? As far as the head shape, I have had close to 100 calves both horned and polled and have yet been able to tell by the shape of their head what the outcome will be. A scurred animal which is actually polled can have the same shape head as a horned animal. Either give him some more time to grow or if your wanting definitive answers now, have him tested.

Barb I think maybe I'll get him tested. His dam and sire both carry dun as well, so it would be interesting to see where he is on that as well. I'll see if I can get better pictures, too.

OK I think I found a post from c that tells about some of the necks on chondro carriers.
"Neck: remember I said the spine is affected? That’s because cartilage is involved, and cartilage is affected.
The whole spine is shorter. This makes the neck shorter, because the neck is the start of the spine. You are seeing the cervical bones (the upper part of the spine). Some dwarfs appear to have almost no neck at all. It’s as though the head is attached directly to the shoulder. These are the extreme cases."

I'm betting on: non-chondro (the legs are longer than they appear; they (legs) haven't straightened out yet) and horned ( the soft-curved M shape of the top of the head, poled have more of a soft-curve ^ ).

Don't have enough experience with polled, but I'm betting non dwarf. Legs are too long to be a chondro carrier, imo. Mind you, been wrong before cheers, c.

Always test... Never guess. Hey guys, lighten up It's ok to guess on a 'just born' pic. Does not mean the breeder is going to substitute fun guessing for testing.

redridge, I don't think any of us believe our guesses should replace testing. The question was what do you think. We had the fun of guessing. Here's another guess: Glimmercroft is going to test anyway. Gene often mentions the 'experts' he listened to in his early days about 9 years ago, and how they got it wrong; so much for experts. There are still people out there who think there's a difference between dwarfs and 'shortlegs'. I think he ran into one of them. The test has only been available for 10 years, and it's a wonderful tool. Aren't we lucky to live in such technically advanced times. cheers, c.
ah, we must have been posting at the same time, Marion's was shorter, she got there first. Hey, Marion, I guess you're up now? haha

Hi redridge, you weren't the only one posting 'test, not guess. My comment was generic. c.
