NO....I am not posting to encourage any miscegenation in your Dexter herd.
PAY ATTENTION to the things you dislike as much as the things you like. The current A2 "craze" will play out in several ways....some of which will be to your advantage, some to your disadvantage.
I just received a list of A2/A2 bulls available through one semen supplier....THERE ARE 200 HOLSTEINS ON IT. Some of you do something that will turn around and bite you on the butt. The use of cute marketing terms can have an immediate effect on profits....."Grass Fed" looks so appealing.....sounds so right. However, reliance on chemical wormers and external parasite control, combined with a generous consumption of GMO alfalfa hay or pellets.......AND GRASS...... well, Joni got it right....."Give me spots on my apples / But LEAVE me the birds and the bees". I would want beef from a producer who covered ALL bases....not just the trendy " disease of the day".
SO.....if the A2/A2 plays out as real...there will be/is already , 200+ Holstein bulls available to pump up the marketing for the 20,000 cow robotic dairies in Calif. Keep your focus on a broader picture. I know this game well. I just finished up a 30 year surge in popularity of Arts & Crafts furniture. I have seen EVERY possible permutation of fad and fancy catch fire and crash and burn.By being careful, diversified, honest, talented and thorough......I am still 2 years behind on furniture orders...!!!! Your cattle sales will be subject to the same market forces.

Hi Mike, Not sure where you are going with this Holstein A2 stuff. No Dexter breeder would attempt to be in competition with a Holstein dairy. I don't believe that testing/breeding for A2 is a "craze". Probably no downside, in that there does not seem to be any reason to retain A1 in favour of A2, all else being equal. You seem to be connecting the idea of being "careful/diversified/honest/talented/thorough" (lack of, something coming back to bite you in the butt) with A2 testing/selection? I don't see the connection. Perhaps I am misunderstanding your post? ..marion

Okay Marion....I don't have the time this minute to do a quick seminar on the market forces in the Natural Foods business. They are at play here. ALL sellers of Dexters and Dexter products are subject to the EXACT same forces that sellers of Gypsum or Asbestos are. Understanding that helps avoid positioning traps and dead ends.
All of us sell to the "Wine and Cheese" crowd.
For some of our customers it is St.Julien and Gruyere
For others, it is Ripple and Velveeta
Both exert important pressures on our marketing and success. Understanding the differences, beyond the obvious, is critical to survival.
Some have an intuitive grasp of market conditions, and seem to succeed effortlessly. Others struggle to avoid disaster, even though they have all the necessary elements in front of them.

Mike, We are not sellers of gypsum or asbestos. Would you care to bring this down (as in smaller, not lesser) to the level of "marketing" Dexters? Please explain how you feel that testing for A2 could affect sales? Are you suggesting that not testing would be preferable, ie: the head-in-the-sand approach?
