I'm concerned that one bull is having so much influence on the Dexter breed. I'm talking about Saltaire Platinum. Now, I'm not bashing him--don't know anything about him except he was polled and passed that along to some of his progeny. But since polled is the newest thing in Dexters is it possible that he and/or his offspring is being used too much in our small numbers. It's getting hard to find a Dexter that doesn't have him in its pedigree--some multiple times. Was he a great bull or was his only good point was that he was polled and his semen was readily available? I'm just asking. Don't know the answer.

Wow, Larry....they jumped all over that.
I'm interested in the readout on him and his "performance". Anyone with any statistics ?? From the pictures I've seen, he was a real "looker". We can prod Carol D for an answer.

Hi lhaggard, have a look at a photo of him, and you can see why someone would want to use him. He actually only has 63 registered calves to him in ADCA over the period from 1994 to 2007, not many progeny really for a bull, so not such a large direct impact on the national herd. I am sure there are many bulls who have far more progeny on the ground than that. Look at his descendants, he has had a wonderful impact on type. He had great type and conformation, a bull anyone would want to use, with or without polling. I do not breed specifically for polling, but I would be thrilled if I could have had him as my herd bull. Maybe you are just noticing him more as well. I am sure there are other significant bulls who are turning up in pedigrees with the same incidence which you maybe are just not noticing. regards Louise
