Hi Donna,
I just did a bit of simple maths, so the dairy farmer only managed either one calf from 9 had 2 testicles removed, the others none or 2 calves out of nine had one testicle removed and 7 had none.
That is sooo funny, now I know your vet was telling you a tall tale. Just wondering, is your vet John Montgomery?
Or maybe the dairy farmer needs new glasses LOL

Hi Louise, I guess we've castrated around 180 to 200 bull calves one way or another. I did miss one testicle once and only noticed when that calf was about 10 months old, cresting up, pounding the fence line and rumbling thunder to the hereford females over the fence.
We had the vet come out to four remnant yearling bull calves last August. He questioned why I didn't use the tri-bander so I told him. He then moved around behind them and said, "Oh, I see what you mean. Biggest part of them, aren't they." Margaret

Hi Margaret, I'm sure even the experts and very experienced such as yourself miss the very odd testicle sometimes, in a rush or doing a whole lot of calves, bad weather etc, but not bad statistics only one from so many calves. One testicle from 400, 0.25% error rate. They sure are so obvious though once they get a little older.
Just sold earlier this year a bought in black baldy steer, once he started cresting we realised what was happening he went to the saleyards. Still got a good price for him though, even though the saleyards sold him as a bull, not as much as if he had been a steer but we still made money on him. I remember you saying you had to get the vet out to those older bull calves, and just how well endowed they were LOL.
Hi RedRidge, yes, some people do the same here too, I know of one Simmental stud that do a lot of AI work who use a Lowline stag, "short sacking" him as you guys over there call it. Easiest way for them to detect heat in their cows. is that why you guys "short sack" ?
regards Louise
