We have a 7 mo black dexter heifer who has this scab-like growth at the top of her back. It's been there for several weeks. It's white and very hard. Initially I thought it was caked dirt so I worked it off. It doesn't seem to bother her even when you pull it off. I don't think it's actually a scab as it's harder than that. Anyone have any idea what it could be?
Pretty sure it's a skin issue of some sort.

Are warts hard? Based on what I'm reading it seems like either a wart or ringworm.

Can you gets pics of it? I've always found warts to be more grayish in color, however ringworm is white. If you have other cattle it's possible that they will contract it also. If you can isolate the calf until gone it would be better, if you pick off the stuff wear gloves ringworm is contagious, get a sample of it and have your vet look at it for you.

After googling and talking with another knowledgable source I'm Pretty sure it's ringworm. This is the cow we have so she's already on her own. Attachments:

Well if it is wear gloves around her, and again to confirm just take a scraping of it and drop off at your vet and ask him to confirm. Some vets say to let it run it's course, where she has it is not too bad, if it's around the eyes it's harder to treat. If you treat try any anti fungal spray or cream. One of the anti fungal foot creams from any pharmacy is a good start. Good luck and let us know what happens.
