Being fairly new to the Dexter breed (2009), I struggled with the whole registration process, including genetic testing. Now that I have successfully navigated the testing process, I would like to help other newcomers. Here are two posts I did on my blog: How to Order Genetic Testing for Your Dexter at Texas A&M
How to Do Genetic Testing for Your Dexter at UCDavis Lab
Both of these are step-by-step tutorials with lots of photos and explanations. I have included tips to help you avoid the mistakes I made--the chief one being how long I procrastinated! If you have any questions, clarifications or other suggestions please feel free to message me or leave a comment on one of the posts. (I will get an email about it.) If you find the process helpful, I'd love to know that, too! Each of these posts took literally hours to do, and I hope they will help others de-mystify this all-important process. Happy testing!

I emailed Jill Delany last wk and asked how to get obligate non condro on a calf I just bought. She said it should have been automatic but the computer didn't pick it up so she set it manually. Next day it was there.

Interesting, Will, I didn't know you could do that! Thank you for the tip. I don't have any more obligates to register now, but I'll try it next time. Thank you for that info, and I'll update the post to reflect it.

These are excellent, I have not used VGL directly yet, but will be soon....this is sure to be a help. Thanks Susan.
By the way, to make them easier to find for more people, please send the links to your ADCA regional Director and ask her/him to propose they be added to the ADCA web page.

Glad to help, Dave! I really hadn't thought about that, but I'm willing to give it a shot! I do realize that eventually they are going to get lost in a long list here. That's one reason I included "Dexter" in the titles, to make them easier to find with a Google search. I have them tagged "ADCA" and "Dexters" among others for the same reason. I appreciate your suggestion.
And thank you, too, for your encouragement, Barb!

Susan,
That was a great job!
For owners who wish to have their animals added to the Legacy registry with the purple font they should affiliate: LEGACY. Once they have their results they can change the affiliation to the ADCA code and the report will go to ADCA. If they also wish to participate with PDCA the same process.
There is NO cost at this time to add your Dexter to the Legacy database. It provides a visual pedigree of recorded genotypes. Legacy is in the process of adding the early Royal Dublin Society Herd books and at least the first ten herdbooks from England to the registry with hopes that in the future owners can trace their genotypes back as far as they go!
Some have already been added but still adapting the system to take the old entries so it a beginning process.
