Canada allows breeding stock to be imported from the US. Canada may be a different country to US (just in case you hadn't noticed they're connected) but same continent, with a non-physical border, no physical barrier and no isolation. No doubt Canada also has BSE, it would not be in only US. You also have many diseases over there eg rabies, foot and mouth (plus many others) that are not in our country.
Australia cannot risk these diseases being imported into our country, no BSE means no limitations on our cattle. We have a very large export industry in beef, one of the few countries in the world that can export beef to any country in the world, with no limitations because of disease.
As time goes on and diseases develop in other countries, our Quarantine Department become more vigilant and strict, not less. We used to be able to import live cattle, but now only genetic material. There is a no going back.
Do you really think our Government would risk this status to allow a Dexter bull to be imported? I think not! Regardless of lobbying by Dexter cattle breeders, why would they risk a whole industry for a hobby breed bull.
We Australians like it this way too, no problems eating T-bones, no matter how old the animal is. We can eat brains too of both sheep and cattle, no scrapie either.
