Well...I got up this am expecting...or hoping to find a new calf...but instead it was a dead heifer with no calf born. Very devastated...Don't have a clue what happened. Unbelievable. Well...I had 3 healthy calves out of 4...so I still can look at my growing herd.

Well...I had 3 healthy calves out of 4...so I still can look at my growing herd. So very sorry to hear. I would guess a breech or similar problem with calving. What signs did she present last time you saw her?

The only thing she presented was about 24 hours earlier I felt she looked and acted depressed. Separated from the others...and I thought she was getting ready to calve. Not sure what happened during the evening. She went from being rotund...to very skinny with belly hanging low...thought calf was moving into position. I may look inside her to see what the deal was with the calf. Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

Maybe get the vet to do a necropsy so you know what the problem was, just in case there is something to be learned and prevented in future.
I'm so very sorry for your loss!

So sorry for your loss. Do you think she was trying to have the calf? Did you think of feeling for feet? Not that I'm sure you would want to but.... just an idea. I also lost a cow last year, she was trying to give birth to a calf who's head was turned back. I had the vet there pretty quick, but even the vet couldn't help. I had the vet put the cow out of her misery, it was a hard loss. Dexters calf very easily most times, but like all cows things happen, not to say this was what happened to your heifer. I hope you find out what may have caused it, for your own sanity. Its a hard loss for you, my thoughts are with you.

trdean,
So sorry for your loss. There are a multitude of things that could have happened here and I hope you can get to the bottom of it. Last year I lost a cow after she calved. The calf punctured the uterus during the birthing process and the cow bled out. I felt helpless and was devastated. These situations are certainly not the norm, yet they part of what we all face in farm life.. Hoping for much better days ahead for you and your sweet Dexters. :-)

Very sad, so sorry. It is such a let down to lose a calf, but to lose the cow too... Devastating
