Here is our latest heifer calf, born around noon today! This is SA 11B, our 8th heifer so far this year.... we still have 4 left to calve. She is out of our 12 year old Missy and Loki. Big girl! If anyone needs heifers, we sure have them!

It's nice to see the older cows still having calves. Here in Australia many don't get to live that long, culled for one reason or another. You may have to use some of your heifers for meat. We do. The meat is just so sweet compared to steers, very nice. You know next year you will have a zillion heifer orders and you will get all bulls, Murphy just loves to play a hand LOL

I'd love to help you and your dad with bull calves Emily, but even with a lot of bulls lately, we have the same problem filling the demand for meat! That said, we've been hoping for a lot of shortie heifers since this will probably be Shamrock Mike's last calf crop unless we go the AI route. I'm hoping to find one this morning out in the pasture out of Matilda, who has an udder to die for. Mike is out in the back corner now on his own eating long grass and enjoying the nice weather. He didn't even come up when I turned out a cow that we're going to be AI'ng in the next few days in an adjacent pasture, that is nothing like him at all. I'll probably do the deed in the next week or so.
Congratulations though on a successful calving season!

Mike being 12 is still really impressive! His line was known for getting arthritis pretty bad if I remember right. Thoughts with you guys when you have to do the deed... I have gotten really attached to a couple of my bulls and fear the day that I can't keep Yogi. Hope you get your little heifer! We are still waiting on at least 4 more cows to calve... they are probably waiting until I am home. At least that's what I like to think

He was doing pretty well until he got into a tussle with a 1800 or so pound Highland Bull a few years back. He lost but clearly put up a good fight. His skin was ripped all over, the Highland had gotten the horns up under Mike's armpits and ripped them up, lots of puncture wounds from getting speared, and he ended up tearing a ligament. When I got to the farm and saw that things were not right, I ran through the pasture looking for Mike. I found him under an apple tree with a look on his face like "I'm sorry I let you down, I'm not the top bull here any longer" We weren't sure he was ever going to get up but we nursed him back, and he's bred quite a few since then. The vet said we'd be lucky to get a year out of him, but it's been almost 5 now. Finally the arthritis has gotten the better of him.
It goes without saying the Highland bull was gone within a couple of days following that.

Hans, Mike has been on my mind lately for some reason, but I hesitated asking you for an update. Just know you're in my thoughts. I'm so very sorry you have to do this. You are so good to do what you have to for the bull that has served you so faithfully, but that doesn't make it any easier. Blessings on you.

It was reading about Mike on this forum that we were not that disappointed when our much anticipated and wanted boy, born last winter, tested chondro-positive. The ‘Chosen One’ will begin his (very busy) lifetime job come this year’s breeding season and our fingers are crossed he will do for us as Mike has done for you.

Thank you all for the kind words. Emily, you and your dad sure did well putting Falkirk's Eoin and Shamrock Flo's Gracie together in the pasture there at Shamrock Acres way back in 2001. At least Mike will live on for us at -320F and breed some selected girls for a while
