I've lurked on the forum for awhile for information, although I did introduce myself awhile back on that page. I thought I would share our little dun heifer, Hazel Mae. Born Friday 8-15, 34.4 lb weight after 12 hours. Out of a horned black cow and polled red bull. Our first calf on our little homestead. I'm not experienced, so not sure if she is polled or horned yet.

Shes lovely, rub her head where horns should be, you should feel little bumps in a few days. She kinda looks horned to me, just from the shape of her head, but you will know pretty soon. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. I'll do that tonight. I'll be bringing her in the house to tattoo her and pull tail hairs for testing.

What a pretty heifer.
We find that sometimes with our heifer calves the horn buds aren't obvious for some weeks. The bulls are usually born with little buds you can feel but not so the heifers. When we dehorn we can do the bull calves early, as early as 3 days old, but the little heifers we leave sometimes up to a month old or so. Also if you can clip the hair off down to the skin you will see a little bare patch of skin with no hair growing where the horn buds will develop. Have a look at the top of her head, we find polled calves have flat hair down their skull where the horns would be, and the horned calves have little tufts of hair there. Also the horned calves are flatter across the top of the skull whereas the polled have a rounded skull.
