We were gone for a week, a full day to get there and another full day to get back. There's no easy way to get to West Texas from Georgia, but oh my, is it worth the trip! Here's what we did and saw while we were there: God's Country, West Texas - With photos of cattle, horses, cowboys and some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. West Texas, Part II - More cattle and horses and ranch country. West Texas, Part III: Davis Mountain Dexters - Meet Robert & Patty Martin and their Dexters! West Texas, Part IV: Cowboy Breakfast and Frank's Tank - More amazing scenery, and a breakfast guaranteed to make your stomach growl! West Texas, Part V: Our Last Day - Complete with two rather scary adventures.

Susan, I went through all your pictures from your trip....They are sssoooo nice...I like West Texas but I would not want to live there.....I have not been there to visit but have been through it ,,, very desolate but has some beautiful scenery.....A little too barren for me.....But it is an interesting place to visit....You did a great job on your pictures.....Glad your back .....Donna

You're both so sweet, Donna and Fran! Thank you! The country is semi-desert, Donna, which is why it's so barren. And it's not for everyone, that's for sure. It's very hard country to live in as a rancher, but once it "bites" you, you're really bitten. When I was in 10th grade living in California, my family went on a camping trip to Salton Lake. It's semi-desert, and everyone in my family hated it--except me. It got into my soul and swelled, is the only way to describe it. I wandered around with my eyes on the ground looking at the fascinating rocks and plants. I had no idea then that I'd be marrying a man with roots in the semi-desert of West Texas, but I guess it's a good thing Herb fell in love with me instead of one of my sisters! While we were out there this time we heard about at least two cases where a couple tried to ranch out there, one of them being local and one not. In both cases the non-local hated it and ended up not being able to stand it. All of our kids thrive on being out there, except one. I guess it's in your blood and your soul, or it's not! You're a true horse-lover, Fran! I showed my husband the photo of Romeo with his head buried in Kara's chest (he wasn't there for their reunion), and I told him that when it gets to be a nuisance having 3 horses and a pony here, having to feed hay year-round, let's look at that photo and remember why he's here.

ok Susan do you mean the Salton Sea? Even though it is a lake it is call the Salton Sea, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salton_Sea I grew up in California. Stunning pictures it's a hard life for those who live there, but as you said with some folks the area gets in there blood. You should make a video, I thought of you with this. vimeo.com/22132017 Barb

Wow, Barb, you're pretty sweet, too! But I'm going to say it quick before someone else does--his photography is SO far above mine that I hate to even call my efforts "photography!" And yes, I do mean the Salton Sea! It was so long ago I forgot the real name, but not the feeling it inspired in me.
