Nice find Barb. Interesting that the Irish family believed the Dexter came from Spanish ships that went down off the coast of Ireland.

Thanks for the video Barb. Lovely looking Dexters and don't you love the colouring of the Moile. There is a Spanish influence even in the Irish people, they call them the "black Irish". Have you ever noticed how many dark haired and more olive complexioned people of Ireland as compared to the English?

That's very interesting about the snails. I believe more and more that our breed is related to the Swiss fighting bulls and the Spanish ones also.

Black Bulls of Camargue
Ever since I've known Dexters, I've thought they remind me of the black "bulls" of the Camargue, in southern France. I put "bulls" in quotes because the cows and calves are black, too, but they always refer to them as the black bulls--probably because in France the feminine name for something usually gets swallowed up in the masculine name when you're talking about both sexes. They actually have bull-fights with those bulls (I believe only the actual bulls). I had a Camargue horse there, and they are used to herd the bulls. They're quite small, very hardy horses, and the cattle are quite small, too, although I believe bigger than Dexters. I'm sure they're quite inbred because they only live in this one area of France. So maybe the Spanish bulls got around to lots of places!

Lower Delaware
It reminds me of the ponies on Assateague Island, they were also supposed to have swum ashore from a wrecked Spanish ship.

Patti, had to go back and look at my post you had me thinking I didn't put "Swiss". Lol then I saw I put bulls, yeah meant cows. Would be fun to get hair from some and genotype them and see how close their genotype markers are to Dexters. Anyone going to Switzerland anytime?

There used to be a guy in W. Va that bred Herens cattle. Not sure if he still has them or not, maybe easier to get hair from him?? Guy's name was Lemon. Full address in article. www.farmshow.com/a_article.php?aid=18053Carol K
