Just had to share this funny shot. This is Elle, one of my girls who I milk. She also happens to have been my first show cow so let's just say she is quite special... and privileged. ;-) I'm planning to milk her daughter Atti "Red Ridge Formal Attire" also, a beautiful red heifer. She is apparently quite malnourished these days which is why she is heading toward me as I walked out into the pasture with the camera - ha NOT! You never know when pockets have cookies. If she ever calves again (yes she is due any day), I'll get a shot of her udder. She is, imo, a great example of both beefy and milkie. I snap this pic on the way to take a pic of something else and it turned out so funny I thought I'd share.

Nice pic, Sheri. I'd love to see other views of her, including her udder--and the new calf!

I would too. LOL. Technically she isn't due until the 7th so... I'm just getting impatient. I have some other pics of her on our Web page but yes... I'm anxious to see a calf. This will be the first calf by Blackhawk, so calf will be obligate A2/A2, non-chondro, PHA free, and either black or red (could carry dun). She had been rotationally grazed all summer and just recently began receiving 1.5 lbs of 14% pellets simply because she was attempting to convince me she needed the extra boost with the unusually dry Sept we had. She obviously didn't but... giving her and a buddy a few handfuls a day keeps her out of the woods and close to the barn. ;-) Safer calving.

Congratulations! She's already making mama chase after her! Every time I see that, I'm thankful our human babies didn't make us hop up from delivering them and start running after them!

Hi Redridge, Congratulations, looks like Hautie's already got her own mind. Can you get another , "after" photo of Elle from the front, just for contrast?

Congrats. Redridge...Looks like a spunky little girl....Poor momma , after that hard delivery, she has to chase her all over....That's is why I put mine in a pen for a week or so, then the momma can get her strength back a little...Poor Elle....I guess you named that calf right "Hautie"....That is a cute name....Again..Congrats....

Lol. Calf was still wet. And it was a very easy delivery. Our cows all give birth in the small 1 acre pasture adjoining the barn. This keeps the barn clean and gives mom plenty of room. Grass, fresh air and sunshine. While the calves are still wet we carry them to the paddock. This pair also had access to a clean dry stall since we were expecting a week straight of rain. We pull tail hairs within an hour of birth. This also allows for plenty of hands on with the calf in the first week. They are put back out with the herd after a week. Because Elle is one of our milk cows, she knows the routine and comes with calf in tow to the barn every morning when she hears the utv. Haughty is her second calf. Her first calf, a homozygous polled, A2/A2 red heifer out of Badger, named Red Ridge Formal Attire "Atti" will be our third milk cow when she freshens in another year. She will be bred later this fall to our chondro bull Rowan.
There are always exceptions to where we calf depending on weather, heat being one. The breeze on the treed hills of our back pasture are cooler than the confinement of the barn - but I don't normally calve in mid summer.
