What are your personal preference for ear tags? My vet uses a "one piece" tag, where most of the people I know use a "two piece" tag. I'm wondering the pros and cons of each. Any recommendations of a specific gun and tag supplier would be appreciated. I usually had my calves tagged when I take them to the vet in the fall to have them castrated, dehorned etc. I substantially increased my herd last year, and I have too many to tell them apart now, so I think I want to tag them myself when they are a couple days old; when I can still catch them and there is no mystery of who the mama is. I may start tattooing them myself too, but as long as I tag them and know who's who, I can have the vet continue to tattoo in the fall. I might just grab some tail hair at the same time too for DNA testing. Any advice?

PS... rather than dehorning, have you considered keeping horns on, or using the polled gene to remove horns? I have mostly polled calves, but I don't see any practical purpose for the horns at all. However, I do see some negatives, such as: 1) Hard on fences and buildings. 2) Hard on each other. 3) Hard on people. 4) More difficult to manage in chutes and feeders. Of course, you might say that all of those negatives are not real, and/or can be managed. To that I would say, Why? As the years go on, I will do more and more selection for homo polled animals. Thanks for the link on the ear tags, I will check them out.
