Dexter Cattle Sex Color A1A2 and Poll Calc....xlsx (20.61 KB)I'm new here and would like to start things off by sharing my Excel spreadsheet that will give you all of the possible phenotypes and genotypes of offspring between two matings. All you need to know is the genotype of both the sire and dam. Enjoy.

You're welcome. The calculator might be a little confusing for some who aren't used to using MS Excel. However, all one needs to do is type in the two genotypes of the two parents into the 'Genotype 1' and 'Genotype 2' cells of the spreadsheet and it will take care of the rest. All this calculator will do is calculate the genotypic and phenotypic ratios for each mating.

How are people liking the calculator? Is it useful? Do you have any questions about how to use it and/or interpret it? I'm curious to know. Thanks.

Hi
I am a little confused as to its use. Is there a possibility that you could give actual parent examples and explain input for them and the output. eg ED/ED Bb and ED/ED Bb what is the likelihood of dun offspring? Thanks

Well done, and thanks. I downloaded and tried it. To help first time users, you might highlight the input cells, D3 and F3, and put a little "quick start" explanation into the sheet. Have you thought about adding sex, polled, and A2/A1 to the matrix so folks can see their probability of winning the lottery and getting that red, homozygous polled, A2/A2, bull? I'm being a little sarcastic, but it would be an interesting exercise right?? Nice to know there are other nerds out there in the Dexter world Dave

I've updated the spreadsheet so that it now calculates the sex, color, and polled/horned probabilities of offspring between to cattle. I've also included a reference/guide that explains how to use and interpret the spreadsheet. Enjoy.

isurob, math and tables are not my forté so could you help me out here? Let's take a sire genotype of Pp and E+/E+ (red, does not carry dun). Would that translate to YYbb? First of all, I couldn't seem to get anything to plug into the chart. In the Color Generator, I could select the XZBb in the yellow box next to Sire Genotype, but I couldn't type anything in. So what am I doing wrong? If it makes a difference, I'm on a Mac laptop.

You are correct on the E+E+ converting to YY, HOWEVER, the dun gene is LOWERCASE b, so E+E+/BB would be YYBB, and you would type that into the input field in the color generator. As far as being heterozygous polled... you would type in Pp in the polled/horned generator. In response to you not being able to type anything into the box... I'm assuming that you have not taken the spreadsheet out of 'Protected View'. Enable editing on the spreadsheet and you should be able to type in the highlighted fields.

Thanks. Part of the problem is, it wouldn't work on my laptop because I don't have Excel. Duh! I opened it in my Mac desktop, and I got it to work twice. Now I can't get it to work again, and there's no option to put it in Edit mode. Sigh! I do NOT excel at Excel! However, I did take screen shots of the results, so I have them. Interestingly enough, breeding the same bull to two cows and a heifer, here are the results: A heifer I sold: Polled black bull calf--18.8% chance. I'm not sure if he's hetero or homo polled. At least my bull did right by my customer. One of my cows: Polled black bull calf--18.8% chance. I haven't tested him so I don't know if he's hetero or homo polled. Since I plan to castrate him, I don't want to know. My best cow: Horned black bull calf--only 6.3% chance. I need to have a talk with my bull. I will say, my best cow was the first one he bred, so he improved with practice.
