Someone just asked me if I know anything about Theileria, also known as East Coast Fever. Here's what the Merck Manual has to say. I'd never heard of it--but I've had a run-in with its near relatives. On a recent thread I mentioned my Camargue horse that I had to leave in France because he was positive for Piroplasmosis. It turns out, Theileria is related to equine Piroplasmosis and also Babesia. Unfortunately, I've heard of that, too, because my 19-year old nephew is very ill from Babesiosis and Lyme disease. I saw online that Theileria is common in Africa, and some of the countries mentioned are on the eastern part of Africa, although I couldn't find out for sure if that is where the name "East Coast Fever" comes from. Apparently it is also found in India, other parts of Asia, and Australia. The question is, does anyone know if it is found in Europe and the States and how common it is elsewhere? (My nephew is from Virginia, so I'm curious if Babesia is there, might Theileria be also?) This friend, who lives overseas, had seen a calf suffering from Theileria, being treated with blood transfusions to try to save its life (the transfusions were because of the parasite destroys RBCs and WBCs). Apparently, many farmers think the cattle have pneumonia because Theileria can cause pulmonary edema. Anyway, I'm curious whether anyone has ever run across this?

I've never heard of it but prayers for your nephew's recovery.

Sorry Susan. I was working out of town a few days and then came home to Thanksgiving. I'll email the articles.
